| Only 4% of the original forests in this country remain. We U.S. taxpayers
finance the destruction of the national forests that belong to us by paying private
corporations over $300 million each year in subsidies. Since only a paltry 4% of our
timber supply comes from national forests, it's clearly time to end commercial logging on
public lands. The Zero Cut bill called The Native Forest Protection and Restoration Act
(H.R. 2789) will soon be introduced in Congress to end the federal timber sales program
once and for all. A recent republican poll indicated that 70% of Americans favor
ending commercial logging on Federal Lands! |

For Luna and Headwaters, and the last large unprotected stand of redwoods,
its a different matter as they are "owned" by Maxxam Inc. Viable solutions
do exist, the most promising, a "dept for nature" swap with the government for
the $1.6 billion Hurwitz looted from an S&L in 1985. We must ask, 'how can
anyone really own a 1500 year old being that was tall and old before we entered upon the
landscape?' In Chile, the government proclaimed the ancient alerce tree, similar
in size and age to our redwoods, essentially sacred, it cannot be cut wherever it is
found. For our remaining unprotected redwoods, we must demand this as well. |

"Its not about humans vs the environment or environmentalists against the
workers. Its that without a clean, beautiful environment, theres not gonna be
anything left for us. we cant exist without it."

The Circle by Julia
Butterfly
Going round and round this circle of life,
Each one important to the next
Take one out and this circle starts to fade
Our strength lies in our unity
Diversity is beautiful
but divide is deadly
Feel the sun, the wind, the rain
Feel it as it falls upon our world
Take one away and the circle fades
Climb a tree, breathe the air,
Take one away and the circle fades
Extinction of a species and the circle starts to fade
Every time we close our eyes to the truth,
Every time we close our mind,
The strength of our circle slowly starts to fade |
